The history of the castle dates back to the Hittite era, when people carved into the rocks to create shelters and hideouts during times of war. Later, it served as a defensive stronghold and refuge for the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. The town’s first inhabitants began their lives within the castle, and as the population grew, new terraced homes were built along the slopes below.
Standing about 86 meters high and located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level, Ortahisar Castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of Ürgüp, Avanos, and Göreme. Climbing to the top can be challenging, but the view of the valleys and villages below is absolutely rewarding.
Inside the castle, a network of tunnels, rooms, and passageways reveals how people once lived, stored goods, and found safety within the rock. Today, visitors can enjoy cozy cafés built into or around the castle while admiring the magical scenery of Cappadocia.
